Quinta da Fonte was the address of the 4th Marquis of Praia and Monforte. When World War II broke out, Duarte António Borges Coutinho went to England, enlisted as a volunteer and was accepted to fight at the controls of RAF planes as an aviator pilot. There he discovered his passion for rugby, basketball and athletics. In the 60's and 70's he was President of Sport Lisboa e Benfica. He was in charge of the club's destiny for eight years (four consecutive biennial terms) and during these seasons the professional football team won seven National Championships, one of them undefeated (in the 1972/73 season) and three Portuguese Cups. This period allowed Benfica to consolidate its hegemony in Portuguese football. With an excellent social relationship, he represented the club like no one else before the highest social, political and sporting levels, in Portugal and in the world. During his presidency, Benfica took possession of the land near Estádio da Luz in order to create three football fields, a synthetic athletics track, and eight tennis courts. He was awarded the Golden Eagle by the club in 1973. He then decided not to run in the elections of May 26, 1977, and was succeeded in the presidency of the club by José Ferreira Queimado. Benfica paid tribute to him by giving his name to the new pavilion, the Borges Coutinho Pavilion.
