Montalegre is a village in the District of Vila Real, North region and sub-region of Alto Trás-os-Montes, with about 1800 inhabitants. It is the seat of a border municipality with an area of 805.46 km2 and 10,537 inhabitants (2002), subdivided into 25 parishes.
